DENVER—The gambling city of Black Hawk is not backing down from its ban on bicyclists pedaling their two-wheelers on its narrow streets.
The city in the foothills west of Denver began enforcing its ordinance and issuing $68 tickets June 5, five months after the city passed a law requiring bicyclists to walk their bicycles through town. Black Hawk City Manager Michael Coop says eight citations have been issued so far.
Cycling groups say it’s the only such ban in the country and plan to challenge it.
Coop says the council passed the ordinance after increased traffic—buses, delivery trucks, and motorists—following a law that took effect last year that increased betting limits on gambling.
Coop says the city has no intentions of repealing the ban.
