High winds Thursday caused a fire that has been burning for 10 days in the Great Sand Dunes National Park to grow from 450 acres Wednesday to 3,000 acres.

About 30 people were monitoring the Medano Creek fire as it moved in the northeast area of the 150,000-acre park, said Carol Sperling, park spokeswoman.

The blaze was moving closer to the border of the San Isabel National Forest, she said.

Crews have protected historically and culturally significant areas but otherwise have stood by. The fire began with a lightning strike June 6.

The fire is burning off dead wood and vegetation in an ecosystem that benefits from periodic natural blazes, Sperling said. The park is open.
