PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.—Fighter jets under will practice intercepting and identifying other aircraft around Washington, Baltimore, Richmond, Va., and northern West Virginia next week.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command says the exact date will be announced later.

NORAD people may see fighters flying near general aviation aircraft that are under contract to participate in the exercises.

Scenarios could include airborne terrorists, hijackings, counter-drug operations, aircraft in distress or other situations.

NORAD is a U.S.-Canada command that monitors air and space threats. Its headquarters are at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Similar exercises have taken place in the U.S. and Canada since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
