James Mejía, chief executive of the Denver Preschool Program, filed paperwork announcing his candidacy for the 2011 mayoral election.

Mejía became the first among several potential candidates to file. The filing states that Andrew Hudson, who was a spokesman in former Mayor Wellington Webb’s administration, will be Mejía’s campaign treasurer.

Interest in the election has picked up since Mayor John Hickenlooper decided to wage a gubernatorial bid. Hickenlooper has said that if he loses his campaign to become governor, he likely will seek re-election as mayor.

Mejía also was project manager in Hickenlooper’s administration for the $425 million justice center complex.

A previous at-large member of the Denver Public School Board, Mejía is the father of three and is married to Heather Riley.
