A small fire near Green Mountain Reservoir this morning caused a big commotion, starting when the wheel of a trailer spun off 20 miles north of Silverthorne and “sent a shower of sparks” onto the roadside grass and sage, according to Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue.
Driven by high wind gusts, the blaze spread fast on the east side of Colorado Highway 9. Passing motorists stopped and fought the fire until help arrived, according to the fire department.
Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue, the Kremmling Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service quickly extinguished the fire, which consumed only about one-tenth of an acre, according to a press release.
The fire started about 11 a.m. Firefighting efforts were aided by recent rain that meant the grass was green and damp, according to the release.
