Getting your player ready...

Soccer nerd.

“Mark, now I know why you are a bit strange. You like soccer, the world’s most boring sport. I watched about 10 seconds of it and fell asleep, only to be aroused by the sound of those buzzing bees, or horns, or whatever they were.”

Bill, Denver

Kiz: Hate to be the guy to inform every American who believes soccer poses some kind of threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of a 12-ounce steak, but the sport created a real buzz this week with the 3-2 “tie” against Slovenia. Somebody should erect a statue in honor of ref Koman Coulibaly. His mistake in disallowing the winning goal by U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu gave more food for thought regarding soccer in this country than 1 million orange slices distributed at halftime of youth games ever did. Why? Many Americans might not understand soccer, but nothing awakens patriotism like shouting, ‘We wuz robbed!’ “

Here we go.

“As a high school football coach, I have seen CU’s Dan Hawkins speak at clinics. His snake oil doesn’t seem to be getting swallowed by players, boosters or even his assistant coaches. The move to the Pac-10 Conference is a prime opportunity for people in Colorado to watch the Buffs get their teeth kicked in on a weekly basis. I’m sure it’s all about the money, but I think filling the stadium to capacity for regional, winnable rivalries against Mountain West schools such as Colorado State, Air Force and Wyoming would have been a natural for the 77th-ranked academic university in the country.”

Kelly, Johnstown

Kiz: Everybody seems to be California dreamin’, as if a state with plenty of its own problems is going to rescue CU athletics. True, an appearance by Southern Cal figures to sell all the seats at Folsom Field. But how many tickets will be purchased for a home game against Stanford when the Buffaloes have a 3-9 football team? It’s as if CU president Bruce Benson decided fans won’t come to Boulder, so he will take the Buffs on the road for the benefit of alums living in California. Maybe it would make more sense if CU instead opened a campus and built a stadium in Bakersfield.

Nothing to offer.

“I personally love your idea of Texas Christian’s Gary Patterson being a strong candidate in the next go-round for CU football coach but flat-out don’t see him considering the Buffaloes because of Colorado’s lack of money, and the type of offense Patterson runs probably isn’t seen as appealing.”

Michael, Wichita

Kiz: Hmm, a coach of a team in the Mountain West Conference might actually think he already has a better gig than what CU could offer. Pffft! The sound you hear is a hole being poked in the Buffs’ inflated sense of self-worth when it comes to sports.

Problem goes deeper.

“If the Buffaloes are in a new conference, I suggest we should start with a new football coach and a new athletic director.”

Mark, Highlands Ranch

Kiz: When CU decides to replace Hawkins, do you trust athletic director Mike Bohn to make the right choice?

Slow down.

“Kiz, why don’t you write about your lousy Missouri Tigers being yanked around by Texas? You are a complete joke and failure.”

Eric, bye-bye to Big 12

Kiz: If the Red Sox could overcome the Curse of the Bambino, then Missouri’s penance for admitting me as a student should end in, oh, another 52 years. But here’s the truth. From my first day on campus, the football stadium was where I went to work as a young journalist; it wasn’t a place where I went to cheer. So the Tigers aren’t my team. If Mizzou never beats Kansas again in hoops, that’s OK by me. But there is a sweet music venue in Columbia called The Blue Note, and if that joint ever closed, I would cry.

Broncos jab.

And today’s parting shot suggests that the buzz of those World Cup vuvuzelas is only the second-worst way fans have ever chosen to sound off.

“Do you know the only stadium sound that could possibly be more annoying than the vuvuzela? My answer: Broncos fans yelling: ‘IN-COM-PLETE!’ “

Sandy, Castle Rock
