KAANAPALI BEACH, Hawaii — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Colorado Springs woman who disappeared Thursday while snorkeling in Hawaii.

The disappearance of Tina Fox, 54, spawned a massive search spanning more than 300 square miles in the Maui Triangle. Two boats and two helicopters were called in to assist the search, but to no avail, according to Matthew Varites, petty officer second class with the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard was first called about 4:30 p.m. Thursday to start looking for Fox, who was snorkeling at the time with her husband and another couple.

Ocean conditions can change quickly in the area, Varites said. Though conditions can be “really calm and inviting” close to shore, northeast trade winds often leave the waters choppy.

Fox was not wearing a life jacket when last seen about 150 yards from the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa.
