Arizona’s controversial new immigration law, improving health and education in the Latino community and political engagement tactics will be among the top issues at a national conference kicking off today in Denver that brings together Latino leaders and high-ranking politicians.

The conference, sponsored by National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, will feature addresses by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, as well as U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.

Gov. Bill Ritter also will speak during the three-day gathering, which features a number of other state and local officials from across the country, including Colorado state Rep. Edward Casso, D-Commerce City.

U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Mark Udall and U.S. Rep. John Salazar, all Colorado Democrats, also are slated to speak. Jessica Fender, The Denver Post.
