Interstate 70 was closed for more than an hour this morning as firefighters worked to put out a car fire that started after an accident involving an elk.
A spokesman with the Colorado State Patrol says the car was traveling westbound on I-70 approaching the Genesee exit shortly after 5 a.m. when it struck and killed the elk. The car ended up in the median of the highway and caught fire.
Everyone inside the vehicle got out safely. It took several minutes for firefighters to reach the scene, but once they got there they quickly extinguished the blaze.
The crash was visible from a Colorado Department of Transportation camera. At one point the entire vehicle was engulfed and thick black smoke was pouring from the wreck.
The Colorado State Patrol closed both directions of I-70 at Genesee for nearly an hour and a half, until about 6:20 a.m.
