COLORADO SPRINGS — Hold your horses Mountain West Conference, the much talked about arrival of Boise State is still a year away.

Even so, the recent addition of the Broncos was all the buzz Tuesday at the College Football Kickoff Luncheon here, attesting to the school’s rise to prominence in recent years. The MWC extended an invitation June 13 to Boise State to join its membership and leave the Western Athletic Conference. Less than a week later, Utah elected to leave the MWC to join the Pac-10. But the 2010 season has to be played first before either move becomes official starting with the 2011-12 season.

“Once we start practice, I think the whole Boise State thing will go away for a year,” CSU football coach Steve Fairchild said. “About the only thing on our minds right now is our opener against CU.”

Fairchild said the addition of Boise State enhances the MWC’s football reputation but that the loss of Utah’s overall athletic program is a blow.

MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said scheduling issues are still being looked at, but for conference play, Boise State would probably slot into the 2011 scheudle where Utah is right now.
