NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — Justin Rose played bogey-free Friday and wound up with the best score of the AT&T National, a 6-under-par 64, to build a one-shot lead over Jason Day and Charlie Wi going into the weekend at demanding Aronimink Golf Club.
Tiger Woods, who won this tournament last year, hit the ball well for the second straight day. He again got nothing out of it, however, and missed a 30-inch putt late in the round that brought him back to a 70. He was at 3-over 143, which made the cut on the number.
• Na Yeon Choi followed an opening 7-under 64 with a 67 in the second round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in Sylvania, Ohio, to forge a two-stroke lead.
Inbee Park shot a 66, Christina Kim had a 67 and Alena Sharp a 68 to share second at 9-under 133.
• Tom Wargo shot a 7-under 65 — the first time he has bettered his age in Champions Tour play — for a share of the first-round lead with Russ Cochran at the inaugural Montreal Championship in Blainville, Quebec.
• Alejandro Canizares of Spain is in front halfway through the French Open in Versailles, one stroke ahead of defending champion Martin Kaymer of Germany.
Panthers sign winger Higgins
SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers signed left wing Chris Higgins to a one-year contract.
Higgins was Montreal’s first-round draft pick in 2002 and had 72 goals for the Canadiens in his first three full NHL seasons. He’s scored just 20 goals in the three years since, splitting time with Montreal, Calgary and the New York Rangers.
• Veteran defenseman Jason Strudwick is returning to the Ed- monton Oilers on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old had six assists in 72 games for the Oilers last year.
• The Chicago Blackhawks signed free-agent defenseman John Scott to a two-year contract.
Bly is headed back to Detroit
DETROIT — Former Pro Bowl cornerback Dre Bly is returning to Detroit, signing a two-year deal with the Lions. The former Lion was released by the Broncos in February 2009 and played 16 games last season with San Francisco, starting six games.
• Cleveland Browns defensive end Robaire Smith has been charged with carrying a gun in his luggage at Flint’s (Mich.) Bishop Airport.
• The New York Daily News is reporting that Plaxico Burress has applied for work release for the second time during his two-year prison sentence on gun charges.
Capello retains England job
LONDON — England will keep Fabio Capello as national soccer coach despite the team’s disappointing performance at the World Cup.
• Alvaro Saborio scored twice in a five-minute span of the second half, and Real Salt Lake routed the New England Revolution 5-0 to extend its MLS home unbeaten streak to a franchise-record 18 games.
• U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo signed a contract extension that will keep him at Hannover in the Bundesliga until at least 2012.
