Cooler air is expected to move into the Front Range today, making for a relatively cool Fourth of July. Rain and thundershowers are a definite possibility for fireworks time.

Temperatures were in the low 90s for the sixth day in a row on Saturday. But that streak was expected to end as an unusually strong July cold front sweeps over the metro area Saturday night.

The cold front is expected to cause temperatures to drop almost 20 degrees between Saturday and today. High temperatures around Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins are expected to be in the low to middle 70s for Independence Day.

9News meteorologist Marty Coniglio thinks there could be enough shower activity in some areas this evening to compromise a few fireworks displays. But most shows should be able to continue as scheduled.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers will be out in force to keep holiday-weekend driving at a safe level.

On Saturday, a driver died in a two-vehicle crash on the Western Slope and a motorcyclist died in a single-vehicle crash in Denver.

A man driving a Chevrolet Cavalier crossed the Interstate 70 median west of Glenwood Springs and collided head-on into a red Ford pickup, killing himself and seriously injuring two people in the pickup.

The driver of the Cavalier, a 33-year-old man from Silt, was not identified pending notification of relatives, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The pair in the pickup, Robert Molina, 32, and Araceli Sandoval, 31, both of Colorado Springs, were rushed to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs in serious condition after the 7:14 a.m. accident.

Also Saturday, a man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle on the ramp from eastbound U.S. 36 to southbound Interstate 25, authorities said.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of family.

The motorcyclist hit a guardrail on the left side of the ramp at 6:28 a.m., and he was ejected from his bike.
