The first of two IronKids triathlons scheduled in Colorado this summer takes place Sunday at Nottingham Park in Avon. The national series is designed to motivate kids ages 6 to 15 to lead healthy lifestyles and incorporates swimming, running and cycling events in an age-appropriate triathlon format.
The series aims to host 300 to 400 kids in each of its 12 events, including the Aug. 7 event in Boulder. Since its inception in 1985, IronKids events have had more than 40,000 participants, including seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and Olympians Hunter Kemper and Laura Bennett.
The Avon course will include a bike course closed to motor traffic, a running course on a paved recreation path and grass around Nottingham Lake, and a swimming course lined with a team of in-water safety marshals (wet suits are allowed). On-site registration, race start, transition and finish will all take place at Nottingham Park.
