MINTURN, Colo.—Fire crews are beginning to cut down dead and dying trees infested by bark beetles along the Colorado Trail in the White River National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service says the tree removal began Friday and will continue into next week from Camp Hale to Tennessee Pass. Forest Service officials say the tree removal is happening now because fire crews are available due to a lull in wildfires. A hot shot crew from Pueblo will be working on cutting down the trees with chain saws.
Officials say the trees pose a danger because they could fall along the Colorado Trail.
The bark beetle epidemic has spread to more than 3,000 square miles in the state since 1996.
