COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Air Force Academy says the Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet injured in a parachute jump at the academy last month lost his right leg from the knee down.
The academy says 20-year-old Ohio University sophomore Matthew Pirrello of Centerville, Ohio, also suffered a double-compound fracture in his left leg. He was in fair condition this weekend at Penrose Hospital.
Pirrello was injured June 25 during an airmanship course. His name and injuries had previously been withheld at his request. The family said through the academy Friday that Pirrello remains focused on serving as an Air Force officer.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Parachuting at the academy resumed this week.
