BOULDER, Colo.—A man accused of wounding a University of Colorado freshman with a knife in 2007 is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.
Forty-two-year-old Kenton Astin is charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault. He entered his plea Tuesday.
If he’s found not guilty by reason of insanity, he could be committed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo until doctors determine he’s not a danger to the community.
Astin is accused of slashing Michael Knorps on campus on Aug. 27, 2007. Knorps was 17 at the time.
The trial is scheduled for September.
In 2001, Astin pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to stabbing a Longmont man and spent five years at a state mental hospital before being released.
