ASPEN, Colo.—A man who authorities say ran from an Aspen courthouse after he was sentenced to 3 years in prison is now facing the possibility of 51 years in jail.

Authorities say sheriff’s deputies arrested 45-year-old Warren C. Carter minutes later outside an art gallery Monday. He had just been sentenced for stealing copper when authorities say he fled.

A Pitkin County judge told Carter this week that prosecutors plan to file an escape charge against him. It carries a maximum sentence of 12 years upon conviction but prosecutors say they intend to charge him as a habitual criminal, which would multiply his sentence to 48 years. That would be in addition to his 3-year sentence.
