Prosecutors dismissed charges Friday against a former University of Colorado football player-turned UNLV assistant football coach accused of breaking into a bar bouncer’s car and taking a .45-caliber handgun and a wallet.
Boulder County District Court spokeswoman Catherine Olguin said prosecutors decided to drop the charges of trespassing and theft against Ty Gregorak because the case wasn’t strong enough for conviction.
“Basically, the deputy (district attorney) felt that the people could not prove the claims beyond a reasonable doubt,” she said.
“We are relieved and grateful that District Attorney Amy Okubo dismissed this case. Justice, though delayed, has prevailed,” said Gregorak’s Denver-based lawyer, David Beller.
Gregorak, 31, spent seven years on Bobby Hauck’s staff at the University of Montana and followed Hauck to UNLV in December. The university didn’t renew Gregorak’s contract this summer, and he is now living in Spokane, Wash., exploring coaching opportunities.
The bouncer told police the items were taken hours after he refused to allow Gregorak to enter a strip club May 1 because he appeared intoxicated.
Allen wins junior match play.
A bogey on the 36th hole was good enough for Nick Allen of Raccoon Creek Golf Course to win the Colorado Golf Association’s Junior Match Play title at Bear Creek G.C., as Allen defeated close friend John Ahern on his home course 1-up.
Allen, a recent Dakota Ridge High School graduate, trailed for only one hole but was never more than 2-up. Allen missed a 15-foot birdie try on the 34th hole that would have ended the match and was 2-up with two holes to play. Ahern won the 35th hole with a par while Allen took a double bogey, then Ahern missed a 10-footer for par on the 36th that would have forced extra holes.
UNC hires Douglas.
New University of Northern Colorado softball coach Mark Montgomery made his first hire, choosing former Oklahoma graduate assistant Jeannie Douglas, who was part of the Sooners’ Big 12 championship team in 2007, as an assistant coach.
