GREELEY, Colo.—Investigators say illegal fireworks started a fire that destroyed part of a new playground at a Greeley elementary school.

Fire investigators believe someone playing with fireworks lighted the playground’s bed of dry wood chips Sunday. Some of the playground equipment caught fire.

The Greeley-Evans School District 6 spent $100,000 this summer on the playground at Scott Elementary School. Principal Blakely Wallace says the playground likely won’t be ready for the start of school.

There are no suspects.
