COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Vitaly Marinitch, a 1989 world champion who runs the men’s gymnastics program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, will be the head coach of the American team heading to the world championships in October.

USA Gymnastics named Marinitch coach Monday. He currently coaches 2008 Olympian Joey Hagerty and has coached Olympians Jason Gatson, Brett McClure and John Macready.

Marinitch won the gold medal on the Soviet Union’s 1989 worlds team and moved to the United States in 1995, when he began coaching at the Olympic Training Center. He has been a permanent U.S. resident since 1997 and became a citizen in 2007.
