A 27-year-old woman was rescued early Wednesday after being stranded for hours hanging from a cliff wall on Longs Peak Diamond in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Carolyn Davidson and her climbing partner were descending Tuesday afternoon when Davidson was stranded off the fixed rappel route, unable to go up or down, the National Park Service said.
Davidson and her climbing partner had unsuccessfully attempted to fix the situation themselves for about two hours before calling for help at about 4:45 p.m., according to a release from Rocky Mountain National Park.
After heavy rains around 5:30 p.m., four rangers were flown out to the peak at about 7:15 p.m. to rescue Davidson.
The rescuers finally reached Davidson at about 12:15 a.m., and after giving her a dry change of clothes, food and water. They then helped her climb back up Longs Peak and were able to reach the summit by 3 a.m.
A helicopter flew Davidson from the summit at 8 a.m. today.
Davidson had climbed the same route twice last year. While she did not have self rescue equipment, she was well prepared for Tuesday’s rainy and cold weather.
