Concerns about advocating for aging members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community were voiced at the latest town hall meeting sponsored by One Colorado Wednesday night in Denver.
“It has come up in every forum we’ve had so far,” said Brad Clark, executive director of One Colorado, a gay-rights advocacy and education non-profit organization.
The meeting in Denver drew about 100 people, many workers and advocates from other organizations who work with the GLBT community.
The town hall meetings are designed to focus on issues raised in a survey of the Colorado LGBT community conducted this year. The study indicated the two top priorities for the community were to provide safe schools for the LGBT youth, and to expand family rights.
But participants in the meetings around Colorado also want to make sure the concerns of an aging population are on the list of priorities.
Among those concerns is access to equal healthcare.
Clark said One Colorado will work on a plan using survey results and input from town hall meetings around Colorado to figure out how to enact changes.
“There’s significant opportunity in Colorado to advance opportunities for the LGBT community,” Clark said.
Colorado has more people supporting the LGBT community than opposing it — but the opposition is more passionate about preventing equal rights, Clark said.
Town hall meetings are scheduled next in Durango, Grand Junction and Greeley.
