DENVER—The heat wave is over but now the monsoons are here.

Heavy rains are expected around the state Wednesday, including Denver and parts of southern and western Colorado.

The National Weather Service says that a thunderstorm near Estes Park has dropped 1.5 inches of rain in just a half hour. There are reports of 1 to 2 inches in east-central part of Douglas County.

Flash flood watches are in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. for areas including El Paso County, the Upper Arkansas Valley, San Juan Mountains and the Four Corners region. The National Weather Service says flash flooding is likely, especially in areas where the ground is already saturated.

Mud or rock slides are also possible in mountain areas, including the area in Teller County burned by the Hayman fire in 2002.
