DENVER—A man suspected of starting a fire that destroyed a business he alleged was cruel to animals will remain in federal detention until his trial.
Walter Edmund Bond pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a federal charge of arson of property in the fire at the Sheepskin Factory in Glendale in April.
In denying bail for Bond, U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Watanabe noted a previous arson conviction in Iowa.
Prosecutors say that Bond admitted to a friend that he started the fire in the Denver suburb and two other fires in Utah during a conversation recorded by authorities. Bond has not been charged in the other fires.
Bond’s federal public defender, Edward Harris, did not return a message seeking comment.
