KIOWA — Tim Fry and a friend were heading to Kiowa to get registration tags for his truck. What they saw alongside the road brought them directly into a murder investigation.

“Greg looks at me and says, ‘I think I saw something lying in the field,’ ” Fry said. “I said ‘Are you serious?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ We stopped the truck, backed up and he said, ‘Do you see him?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ “

The two men called 911 to report finding the body shortly after noon June 14.

The body of Randall Wilson, a popular teacher in Kiowa, was found lying near his car. Wilson’s hands were bound behind his back, and a white plastic bag was over his head. A belt was around his neck.

The scene was so bizarre the two men say they were confused by it and concerned for their own safety.

“We did the obvious,” Fry said. “We looked around. We first looked to see if there was anybody in the area to protect ourselves (from).”

The men told a 911 operator that a car jack was lying next to the body but also said the car was not damaged and had no flat tires.

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has good leads in the case and has identified persons of interest. Officials are awaiting test results on evidence that was sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. They are also awaiting business records that were subpoenaed.

Sheriff William Frangis plans to hold a news conference this week on the investigation.

Fry said he hopes Wilson’s murder is solved. The experience of that day left him with an unanswered question.

“If anything bothers me about what we came across that day, it just doesn’t seem like he fought,” Fry said. “I didn’t see any scuff marks. His cloths were clean, almost pressed. That I guess is the most disturbing.”
