A Goldman Sachs-owned power company today said it has signed an agreement with Xcel Energy to build a 30-megawatt solar power array in the San Luis Valley.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Congentrix Energy LLC, a Goldman subsidiary, said the concentrated photovoltaic solar facility is expected to be the biggest solar plant of its kind in the world.

When completed in the second quarter of 2012, the 225-acre array near Alamosa would power 6,500 homes, Congentrix said, using a technology that is more efficient and reliable than traditional photovoltaic cells.

Congentrix will build the array “immediately adjacent to the existing transmission system of Xcel Energy,” the company said in a press release. It is currently securing financing for the project.
