A Colorado Springs police officer was knocked unconscious in a struggle with a 20-year-old homeless man under a bridge Tuesday morning.
Officer M.J. Thomson fell backwards and struck his head on a steel beam in the altercation at Interstate 25 and Cimarron Street. He was treated with staples for two lacerations, but is expected to make a full recovery, the police department said in a statement.
Jonathan Patzel was arrested and faces a felony charge of second-degree assault on a peace officer.
According to Colorado Springs police, Patzel was camping under the bridge and initially gave officers a fake name. As they questioned him, he became belligerent and aggressive. After the assault on Thomson, he was subdued with another officer’s Taser.
