A 70-year-old hiker was found dead on a trail in the mountains southwest of Eldora on Wednesday evening, according to a release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

The hiker was found unresponsive and not breathing 2.6 miles from the 4th of July trailhead.

The trail, which is 5.3 miles long roundtrip, goes to Diamond Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area.

First-responders went to the trailhead about 8 p.m. after a 911 caller told dispatchers that the body of the man had been found on the trail.

Emergency personnel who reached the man a short time later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Other people who had seen the man earlier on the trail said he didn’t appear well and was having difficulty breathing.

The trail, which is normally clear of snow by early July, requires a moderate skill level and gains 1,222 feet in elevation roundtrip.

Brough said there are no indications of foul play. The Boulder County Coroner’s office will determine the cause of death.

The hiker was from Boulder, but the coroner will withhold the name of the hiker until family members have been notified.
