A woman who died in a single-vehicle crash this morning swerved her car to avoid a box, police said.
The woman, identified this afternoon as 21-year-old Yoana Rodriguez of Aurora, was thrown from her car and died at the scene, said Officer Christian Rasmussen, a Commerce City Police Department spokesman.
The fatal crash happened at about 5 a.m. in the 9700 block of Tower Road.
A 2-year-old in the car, a White Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was strapped into a car seat and survived the crash.
Rodriguez was not wearing a seat belt.
Rasmussen said the she swerved to “avoid debris in the roadway,” an “empty box.”
The car left the road and flipped onto its top, coming to rest in a field.
The child was taken to Children’s Hospital. Details on the child’s injuries were not available.
The Adams County Coroner’s Office plans to perform an autopsy on Friday.
Police do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
