Bob and Katie Terrien of Littleton are the recipients of this week’s $25 gift card for their suggestion for a multi-day train trip in North America.

“The McKinley Explorer route run by the Alaska Railroad is a 360-mile trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage. The traveler can choose to continue on from Anchorage to Seward, one of the most spectacular routes in the country … no, in the world,” Katie Terrien wrote. “Traveling from Fairbanks to Denali National Park is about a four-hour trip. We spent a day and night in Denali, saw much wildlife, including grizzlies, Dall sheep, caribou, moose, and one lone wolf. We reboarded the McKinley the next day for an eight-hour ride to Anchorage, passing through beautiful scenery, rugged terrain and jagged peaks of Alaska. We traveled in double-decker dome cars with a full 360-degree view. The lower deck housed a full-service dining room, a must-do. It reminded me of the elegant train travel days of years (past) shown in old movies.”

The Terriens point out that you can also connect to the Anchorage Seward train in Anchorage and travel along the scenic Turn again Arm, where you will see more wildlife, maybe even Beluga whales. We found this trip online starting at $1,059 per person for double occupancy ().

For another good train trip option, check out the online-only story about Amtrak’s Empire Builder, which runs between Chicago and Portland and Seattle and travels along the southern border of the park.
