Two dogs died Sunday in a house fire in the mountains west of Boulder.

The fire broke out about 7 p.m. at 505 Nugget Hill Road, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office media release.

No people were home at the time of the fire, the sheriff’s office said, but two dogs “perished.”

Firefighters arrived to find the single-family home “fully engulfed in flames.” The house fire “spread to surrounding land” in rural Left Hand Canyon “but was quickly contained,” the sheriff’s office said.

Firefighters with Four Mile, Gold Hill, Indian Peaks, Left Hand, and Sunshine fire departments fought the blaze and were assisted by the Boulder Emergency Squad, Pridemark Paramedics, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service.

The home was “destroyed” and firefighters remained at the scene overnight to guard against hot spots and flare-ups.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
