The Oyster Racing Series returns to its Rocky Mountain birthplace for the seventh time Saturday, offering an “urban adventure race” that takes advantage of Denver’s vast trail system and unique cityscape. With the Denver Aquarium as a backdrop to the one-day, multisport contest benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Oyster takes place on a secret course combining the mandatory disciplines of running and biking with surprise disciplines ranging from rafting and climbing to “scootering” and riding public transportation. Surprises in the past have included riding a roller coaster, eating a bug, pouring the perfect pint and swimming in an exhibit at the aquarium (swimming is technically not a discipline, but organizers reserve the right to get racers wet). Racers should show up with running shoes, bikes (and helmets), a cellphone, a camera, a small first-aid kit and $10 to $20 in cash. A fun-loving attitude never hurts, either.
