No, that wasn’t a montage of the Pacers-Pistons at the Palace combined with Bobby Knight’s chair toss against Purdue.
The video blowing up the airwaves now is a brawl between the Greek and Serbian national basketball teams Thursday. It also landed Serbian Nenad Krstic, a center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, in jail. He was later released.
The fight broke out during the last game of the Acropolis tournament, which was stopped with 2:40 left to play. A crowd of about 5,000 at the Athens Olympic Arena watched players exchange punches and kicks on the floor and in the tunnels leading to the dressing rooms.
It started after a hard foul. Krstic then grabbed Greece forward Antonis Fotsis by the throat and also threw a chair toward Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who was pursuing him. The chair hit Yannis Bouroussis, who had not played because of a hand injury.
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Serbian coach Dusan Ivkovic said. “Relations with the Greeks are now very bad.”
Both teams are scheduled to play in the world championships next week in Turkey. Stay tuned for the possible rematch.
