A doctor who stabbed a nurse while a patient in a Lone Tree hospital will not face any criminal charges.
The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s office announced Friday that because of his mental state, Dr. Grady Michael Holder, 53, was not criminally responsible in the February incident.
Holder was in the intensive care unit at Sky Ridge Medical Center on Feb. 13 for alcohol abuse and was being treated for a medical condition.
Holder stabbed nurse Brenda Tate three times with a knife and tried to escape the hospital.
The district attorney’s office said Holder’s mental state was altered from the medical treatment and his condition. Before making the decision, the DA’s office reviewed the evidence in consultation with experts, including one from the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.
Holder allegedly summoned Tate to his room requesting medication, then stabbed her in the upper arm with a knife when she approached, according to the arrest affidavit. She suffered minor wounds.
Holder had been set to go to trial on charges of attempted murder, menacing and second-degree assault.
Holder’s previous criminal history includes a guilty plea to drunken driving in Littleton in 1998. He was ordered to pay fines, perform 24 hours of community service and serve 12 months of probation.
Tate’s attorney, Bob Garvey, had no comment Friday.
An attorney for Holder said he will wait until the motion is official before any comments are released.
