Work on a 24-inch water main under South Downing Street will result in some delays for several weeks, according to Denver Water.

The work by a Denver Water contractor will begin on Tuesday and end Oct. 9.

The work will be done on Downing between East Kentucky and East Arkansas avenues.

One lane of traffic will be open in both directions on Downing, but turns at some intersections will be prohibited.

Denver Water said delays should be expected, although work is scheduled to take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to avoid the peak rush-hour times.

Denver Water spokeswoman Stacy Chesney said the project is part of Denver Water’s upgrade of cast-iron pipe in its system. Much of the system improvement work this summer has been in the Washington Park area.

The work involves cleaning old, unlined cast-iron water mains and lining them with cement mortar lining, as well as adding and replacing valves and upgrading fire hydrants.

The upgrades help ensure a good level of service, maintain water quality, minimize outages and ensure adequate flows to the fire hydrants, Chesney said.
