Matt Joe Weber, 30, an Arvada man accused of knifing a man to death outside a bar early Sunday, made his first appearance in court today.

Weber is accused of first-degree murder in the death of Matias Mondragon, 31, of Rancho De Taos, N.M. He died of a single knife wound that perforated a lung after a fight at the Night Owl Lounge, 2000 W. Midway Blvd.

Weber, told police Mondragon picked a fight with him and a friend, calling them “fags” as they drank at the Night Owl Lounge in Broomfield.

But Shaundra Fuqua, 39, who accompanied Mondragon to the bar, said it was Weber and his friend, Mathew Bufe, 25, who started the fight when they realized that Mondragon was gay.

Broomfield County Judge Thomas R. Ensor set a date of Oct. 15 for a preliminary hearing in the case.

Weber is being held without bond in the Broomfield Detention Center.
