Granite-based Timberline Tours safety kayaker Jakub Nemec of the Czech Republic smoked the field of more than 50 kayakers and raft teams Saturday at the Timberline Gore Canyon Race. Nemec paddled the 5-mile gorge that qualifies as the steepest on the Colorado River drainage in 20 minutes, 32 seconds. Jules Campbell of Carbondale was second in 20:48 followed by part-time Vail Valley resident Ken Oliver in 21:23.

U.S. national whitewater raft champions “Behind the 8 Ball,” captained by Chris “Mongo” Reeder and Mike Reid from Timberline Tours, posted the fasted raft time at 22:03, good for sixth place overall. Led by Lisa Reeder, the Teva Timberline Women had the fastest women’s raft time of 26:12, finishing just behind top female kayaker Sarah Hamilton in 25:55.

Breck cyclist third.

Endurance mountain biker Jeremiah Bishop of Harrisonburg, Va., successfully defended his Breck Epic title last week, finishing the six-day, 245-mile race with an overall time of 18 hours, 16 minutes and 12 seconds. Fellow Cannondale Team racer Alex Grant of Salt Lake City was second, followed by Breckenridge’s Josh Tostado, 20 minutes behind.

Hawaiian Pua Sawicki dominated the women’s field, winning by more than an 90 minutes over Ivonne Kraft. David Overstreet and Mark Thompson from Breckenridge cruised to a nearly 14-minute victory in the Duo 80+ (combined age) category.

Haskins wins triathlon.

USA Triathlon National Team member Sarah Haskins of Colorado Springs won the women’s division of the Chicago Triathlon on Sunday, covering the Olympic-distance course (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) in 2 hours, 2 minutes, 2 seconds to outdistance the field of 15 professional women.

Snowmass skier second.

Walter Wood of Snowmass Village took silver in ski pipe at the ISF Junior World Freestyle Ski Championships on Sunday in Cardona, New Zealand. Wood finished behind men’s winner Noah Bowman of Canada.

Vonn up for award.

Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn of Vail is among those nominated for the 2010 Sportswoman of the Year honor, presented by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The winner is determined entirely by online popular vote, which ends at midnight tonight. Cast votes at .
