Firefighters contained a 13-acre brush fire three miles north of Castle Rock at 1:45 p.m. today, about an hour after the blaze was first reported, according to Andy Lyon, spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue.
Seven fire departments responded with 20 engines and 60 personnel.
According to Lyon, the fire was about a mile southwest of the intersection of U.S. 85 and Happy Canyon Road.
The fire was first reported at 12:36 p.m. and burned brush and some trees.
No structures were damaged although two homes were evacuated for a brief time as a precaution, said Lyon. There were no injuries.
Although the fire was contained within an hour, crews remained on the scene for another five hours mopping up.
Lyon said investigators believe the fire may have been started by a passing train. He said there were two fires which started next to the railroad tracks and then grew together.
The fire occurred in the West Douglas County Fire Protection District. Agencies responding were West Douglas, Castle Rock, South Metro, Littleton, Jackson 105, Franktown and Larkspur.
Lyon said that the firefighters were assisted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Castle Rock Police and the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management.
