DENVER—Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is proposing layoffs, furloughs, higher traffic fines and reduced library hours to help cover a $100 million gap in the new budget.
Hickenlooper presented the proposed budget Wednesday to the City Council. He said it will be the third straight year the city has had to cover a shortfall.
The Denver Post reports the mayor has proposed cutting 158 positions, 38 of which will be layoffs. Police officers have agreed to delay negotiated pay raises of 3 percent to December 2011. Firefighters also agreed to delay raises.
Hickenlooper says he used $9 million in reserve funds and $17.8 million in excess fire pension mill levy funds to help cover the deficit.
Total spending in the new budget is $896.6 million.
