The woman who prosecutors allege stole a German shepherd mix named Buddy that was later dragged to death at the Colorado National Monument has been sentenced to federal prison for being an accessory after the fact.
Melissa Marie Lockhart, 33, formerly of Fruita, was sentenced to serve 12 months and one day.
In July, Lockhart’s brother, 38-year-old Steven Clay Romero, was sentenced to the maximum prison term of three years for dragging Buddy to death in the early hours of Dec. 30.
Buddy belonged to Sacha and Joe Leber of Delta. On Dec. 29, while the family was at a Delta restaurant, Buddy was stolen from the back of the family pickup.Howard Pankratz, The Denver Post
