A Jefferson High School teacher in Greeley admitted to investigators that he fondled and kissed a student and asked her to have sexual intercourse on numerous occasions, according to an arrest affidavit.
The affidavit said that the teacher, David Anthony Rangel, 28, denied ever having intercourse with the 16-year-old.
Rangel appeared in Weld County District Court today where he was advised that he has been charged with one count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.
His bond was set at $100,000.
According to the affidavit, an investigation began when the child’s foster mother told police she had been told that the teenager had had sexual relations with a teacher. She said the teacher’s name was “David”.
Detective Dennis Lobato said Rangel admitted knowing the alleged victim because he had taught her in the past, but denied anything inappropriate happened.
Eventually Rangel said that during the summer the two developed a relationship when they began communicating via instant messaging. At first the talk was about “relationship issues” but progressed to “sexual conversations,” according to the affidavit.
Rangel then admitted that two weeks into the school year, he and the student kissed and he had touched the student over her shirt. However, Lobato said that Rangel eventually admitted that he groped the student under her clothing and asked her to have sex with him.
