Weld County authorities are looking for a man who stole 600 feet of copper wiring from a gravel pit.
The theft happened Frida between 6:30 and 7:40 p.m. at the Cottonwood Gravel Pit, 2002 Weld County Road 20.5, according a Weld County Sheriff’s Office media release.
The price of copper has been on the rise, with copper futures trading at $3.5665 a pound this morning on the Commodity Exchange in New York.
The thief hauled off the “heavy gauge” wire in a red Dodge 3500 extended-cab pickup truck. The truck had a large “push-bar” assembly on the front, tubular chrome step bar, Dodge Ram tail light covers, a chrome tail-gate accent, and a rear cargo window, the sheriff’s office said. The truck is likely a 1998 to 2002 model.
The thief is described as a white man, about 5-feet 8-inches tall and 265 pounds, the release said. He is about 35 years old, with closely cut hair and little or no facial hair. The thief wore a blue t-shirt with a small contrasting design in the center, light grey cargo shorts and sunglasses.
A pale yellow dog was with the thief, the sheriff’s office said.
