Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office is warning residents to be wary of callers asking for money after receiving several reports of fraud on the elderly.

The fraud involves a caller who claims to be a relative, or someone associated with a relative.

In one example of fradulent calls the Sheriff’s Office cited in a release, a callerman called identified himself as the victim’s grandson. The caller said he had been involved in an accident in London and needed money for medical expenses and damages to a rental car.

The victim then transfered money through Western Union to London, and later realized the caller was not a relative.

The Sheriff’s Office said if you receive a suspicious call, make sure you ask for names and numbers, asking the callers to repeat the information, or ask information that a stranger wouldn’t know.

Always confirm a relative’s location with other relatives, even if a caller asks you to keep a secret, the Sheriff’s Office advises.
