GRAND JUNCTION — A grand jury will weigh criminal charges for a state trooper who fatally shot a man at the man’s home in Mesa County.

District Attorney Pete Hautzinger announced the decision Monday.

The State Patrol said 31-year-old Jason Alan Kemp was shot after an “exchange” with a trooper. Kemp was suspected of being involved in a traffic accident. Witnesses told the Daily Sentinel that troopers pounded on and kicked Kemp’s front door. He reportedly refused to open it, telling troopers to get a search warrant.

One witness said Kemp was shot after troopers fired pepper spray through a small opening in the door.
