FORT CAMPBELL, Ky.—The Army says a soldier with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell has died from wounds suffered in an improvised explosive device attack in Afghanistan.

The military says 26-year-old Sgt. Justin A. Officer of Wichita, Kan., died Sept. 29 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The military says Officer was injured after insurgents attacked his unit using the explosive.

Officer was assigned to 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell.

Officer joined the Army in March 2004 and arrived at Fort Campbell in July 2004. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Combat Action Badge and Air Assault Badge.

Officer is survived by his father, Timothy A. Officer of Colorado Springs, Colo. and mother, Linda G. Officer.

A memorial service will be held in Afghanistan.
