FORT LUPTON, Colo.—Budget woes have the city of Fort Lupton looking at eliminating its police department and transferring the duties to the Weld County sheriff’s office

City Administrator Mike Konefal tells Denver’s KUSA-TV that all the departments have been scrutinized for ways to cut costs. Fort Lupton is considering contracting with the sheriff’s department to respond to emergency calls and investigate crimes.

Konefal says the plan could be approved within the month and take effect at the start of next year.

The sheriff’s office has four similar contracts with other Weld County communities. Undersheriff Margie Martinez says the sheriff’s department likely would hire most, if not all, of the 17 people who work for the Fort Lupton Police Department.
