Denver Public Schools issued a statement Saturday evening that it will be investigating a Denver charter school’s marketing attempt to boost enrollment before a state student census.

The Denver Post on Saturday reported that officials at Northeast Academy charter school offered $400 worth of gift cards to families that brought new students to the school the day before the state’s annual Oct. 1 student tally.

“We are concerned that the reported enrollment solicitation is in breach of the school’s charter contract and appears to violate the law,” read the DPS statement. “We will conduct a full examination of the school’s enrollment and marketing procedures and practices.”

The state gives schools a yearly average of about $6,600 per pupil. A 2009 law banned schools from offering items of value in exchange for enrollment.
