Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park was closed by snow Friday night, as the high country got a taste of winter.
Just under two inches of snow fell on Loveland Pass overnight, and some elevations above 10,000 feet in northern Colorado saw more snow during the day.
“This really is the main, first snow over the pass” this season, said Jim Kalina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.
Parts of the I-70 corridor in the mountains, from the Eisenhower Tunnel to Vail Pass, were wet in the morning from overnight snow and rain showers, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Snow making equipment, meanwhile, is being used at Loveland Ski Area. Traditionally, Loveland battles nearby Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in a race to be the first mountain to open for the season.
Saturday in the city should be partly sunny, and skies on Sunday should be mostly sunny, the weather service reports.
Denver’s high temperature on Saturday should be about 70, with a 72-degree high mark expected on Sunday.
Overnight lows this weekend will drop into the mid-40s.
