PIERRE, S.D.—A former South Dakota man charged in a 2008 fatal crash has been given a suspended two-month jail sentence on a drug charge.
Twenty-three-year-old Ross Big Eagle of Denver pleaded guilty to ingesting marijuana. Prosecutors dropped a drug possession charge.
The defense said Big Eagle has doctor approval in Colorado to use marijuana for medical purposes related to the Oct. 31, 2008, crash.
KGFX says Big Eagle faces trial in January on charges including vehicle homicide. Authorities allege Big Eagle was the driver in the one-vehicle crash in northern Hughes County that killed a passenger and the unborn child of another passenger.
