COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 20-year-old man being taken to jail has been seriously injured after jumping out of a police car going 60 mph and getting hit by another car.
Police tell The Gazette that John Winkler of Colorado Springs was handcuffed when he jumped out of the police car Tuesday. They say Winkler opened the front passenger door, jumped out, recovered from his fall and was running across Interstate 25 when he was hit.
Police say his injuries are life-threatening. Authorities say Winkler was arrested on two felony warrants.
Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Noblitt says the unmarked police car didn’t have secured back doors like police cruisers. A second officer was in the back seat.
